Play Therapy Theoretical Foundations
Available spots
Service Description
This 6-hour foundational training provides an in-depth exploration of the theoretical underpinnings of play therapy. Participants will examine the historical development of play therapy and gain a comprehensive understanding of major theoretical models that inform clinical practice with children. The training will cover Child-Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy, Psychodynamic Play Therapy, and Filial Therapy, highlighting each model’s assumptions about child development, emotional expression, behavior change, and the therapeutic relationship. Participants will explore directive and non-directive approaches and learn how theoretical orientation influences intervention selection, therapist stance, and treatment planning. Special attention will be given to integrating attachment theory, neurodevelopmental research, and trauma- informed principles into play therapy practice. Through case examples, small group discussion, and applied exercises, participants will develop the ability to select and justify theory-driven interventions that align with both client needs and their own professional orientation. This training is appropriate for mental health professionals seeking foundational or intermediate knowledge in play therapy theory and is applicable to clinical work with children experiencing behavioral, emotional, attachment, or trauma-related concerns. Objectives: 1. Describe the historical development of play therapy and its evolution within the broader field of counseling and psychotherapy. 2. Differentiate between at least five major theoretical models of play therapy (e.g., Child-Centered, Cognitive-Behavioral, Adlerian, Psychodynamic, and Filial Play Therapy). 3. Explain the core theoretical assumptions about child development, psychopathology, and therapeutic change within each major play therapy model. 4. Compare and contrast directive and non-directive approaches to play therapy, including clinical indications and contraindications for each. 5. Apply theoretical concepts to case examples by identifying appropriate interventions based on a selected play therapy model. 6. Analyze how attachment theory, neurodevelopmental principles, and trauma theory inform contemporary play therapy practice.
